The weekend was blessed with great waves in the 3-5 ft range from the NNW with offshore winds in the mornings and trade winds in the afternoons.

Description:

  • Thursday, April 4th the Rincón, Puerto Rico chapter of the Surfrider Foundation provided a beach cleanup along with the local community to ensure that our event left the beach in a more improved state than when we found it.

  • Friday, April, 5t h at sunset, event organizers welcomed competitors at the luxurious, oceanfront Villa Maria in Rincón, Puerto Rico. Catered by Root’s Bistro bar, live acoustic music by Hank & Yuri, Braid Bar by Sun Bum, and flowers by Tu Jardin. Attendance estimated at 85-100 people.

  • Saturday, April 6th, day one of 7 divisions of surfing competition with a field of 85 local and international competitors (Peru, Continental USA, Canada and Puerto Rico).

  • Sunday, April 7th, finals day of surfing competition, awards ceremony and raffle drawing.

  • Festival Activities - Live music by: Silvermouse, Local Acoustic Guitarist, Bueno Con Velocidad with Marcos Carpena, and Al Son de Bomba, yoga classes for all ages and abilities, slacklining, face-painting, pony rides, artisans, farmers’ market vendors, arts & crafts by O’Neill Women’s, giant bubbles by Sun Bum, mini skate ramp by MD Skate Ramps, on site shaping of a unique Alaia Surfboard, healthy, natural, food and beverage vendors, plus raffle giveaways with great prizes.

  • Two unique additions to this year’s event were the Tropic Groms 12 & Under division (which had a field of 15 competitors) and the Retro men and women’s Shortboard divisions which promoted the local shapers of Puerto Rico by contracting them to handmake (8) different surfboards which were used exclusively during the Retro heats. The board the surfer would ride was determined by drawing a number at the Beach Marshall before each heat.

  • A prize purse of $5,000 was distributed equally to men’s and women’s pro longboard finalists with first prizes of $1,200. Longboardarian Longest Noseride awards went to Tony Silvagni and Maria Fernanda Reyes in the amount of $150.00 each and a Joel Tudor Fin was awarded to highest heat score by Tony Silvagni in the Retro Shortboard Final.

  • Breakfast and lunch were provided to event staff and each of the 85 competitors by Jack’s Shack and Que Viva Trattoria, as well as goodie bags with event t-shirts and products by: Sun Bum, Puerto Rico Tourism Company, Cooperativa de Rincón and Sanuk Footwear.
